Christmas Greetings from Immanuel Lutheran Church

What then could ever be equal to these good tidings? God on earth, man in Heaven; and all became mingled together, angels joined the choirs of men, men had fellowship with the angels, and with the other powers above: and one might see the long war brought to an end, and reconciliation made between God and our nature, the devil brought to shame, demons in flight, death destroyed, Paradise opened, the curse blotted out, sin put out of the way, error driven off, truth returning, the word of godliness everywhere sown… (St. John Chrysostom, Homily on Matthew 1)

Christmas celebration

This is going to be a BIG day for us. We decorate our big Christmas tree and hang our garlands and big ribbons in the morning, getting the church ready for the Baldwin Festival Chorus and our Advent Service of Lessons and Carols at 5 p.m., and then the Sc. Nicholas Party after chat. It would get chis important day off to a good start co have many folks helping with Hanging of the Greens.

The Baldwin Festival Chorus leads the singing for chis service and the people of Immanuel supply the readers for the nine Lessons.

Nicholas Party is a beloved event for us here at Immanuel. The music will begin around 6 p.m., followed by a Christmas carol sing-a-long, and supper with hams and pot-luck side dishes and desserts. Like last year, singers from the Baldwin Festival Chorus plan to join us. They help us with the Christmas carols!

This early evening Christmas Eve liturgy is a popular one in our neighborhood. It is an early-evening service which is also good for families with small children and for out-of-town guests, permitting chem co gee home at a reasonable hour.

The traditional Gospel Lesson is John 1, with its magnificent doctrine of the holy incarnation of our God. We enjoy lots of Christmas carols.

The Entrance into ]erusalem

“Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass.”

Look at Christ. He rides not upon a horse which is a steed of war. He comes not with appalling pomp and power but sits upon an ass, which is a gentle beast to bear burdens and to work for men. From this we see that Christ comes not to terrify, to drive, and oppress, but to help and to take for himself our load. (Martin Luther)

“Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass.”

Dear Members and Friends of Immanuel Lutheran Church, I love Luther’s point above about the Palm Sunday donkey: “Christ comes not to terrify, to drive, and oppress, but to help and to take for himself our load.” He does that on the Cross. And therefore, you and I have real hope in this world!

Our Holy Week services all celebrate this world-changing love of Jesus. Here are our Holy Week services for this year:

  • Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday, 11 a.m., April 13, Pastor Gregory preaches
  • Maundy Thursday, 7 p.m. April 17, Pastor Lara preaches
  • Good Friday, 7 p.m. April 18, Pastor Carol preaches
  • Easter Vigil, 7 p.m. April 19, Pastor Greg preaches our traditional patristic sermon
  • Easter Sunday, 11 a.m., April 20, Pastor Gregory preaches

Holy Week is embraced by these two great Sundays: Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. If you have never experienced the Three Holy Days toward the end of the week, do try to attend this year. The golden hour is 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil are all at 7 p.m. These are very moving services.

If you live far away, but could vacation in New York City, it would be awfully good to see you again, if not during Holy Week, then sometime! Wherever you are across our good land, have a good Holy Week. God bless you and give you peace and joy in the Easter victory of our crucified Lord Jesus.

Here is the link for our Good Friday service:

You can tune in around 7 p.m. or watch a recording any time later.

We do not plan to live stream our Easter Vigil. For one thing, so much of that dramatic liturgy is in our darkened church that we doubt it would show up well on video. But come ahead to church for that important liturgy! It is the first celebration of Easter.

God be with you all.

in Christ,

Pastor Gregory Fryer
