Answer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Where is this written? Answer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">The holy evangelists, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and St. Paul write thus:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u201cOur Lord Jesus Christ, on the night in which he was betrayed, took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it and gave it to his disciples and said, \u2018Take; eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">\u201cIn the same way he also took the cup after the supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them and said, \u2018Take, and drink of it, all of you. This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.\u2019\u201d<span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote2sym\" name=\"sdfootnote2anc\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/span><sup>9<\/sup><span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">What is the benefit of such eating and drinking? Answer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">The words \u201cgiven for you\u201d and \u201cshed for you<span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote3sym\" name=\"sdfootnote3anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/span><sup>00<\/sup><span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/span>for the forgiveness of sins\u201d show us that forgiveness of sin,<span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote4sym\" name=\"sdfootnote4anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/span><sup>01<\/sup><span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/span>life, and salvation are given to us in the sacrament through these words, because where there is forgiveness of sin, there is also life and salvation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">How can bodily eating and drinking do such a great thing?<span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a class=\"sdfootnoteanc\" href=\"#sdfootnote5sym\" name=\"sdfootnote5anc\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/span><sup>02<\/sup><span lang=\"ar-SA\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/span>Answer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Eating and drinking certainly do not do it, but rather the words that are recorded: \u201cgiven for you\u201d and \u201cshed for you for the forgiveness of sins.\u201d These words, when accompanied by the physical eating and drinking, are the essential thing in the sacrament, and whoever believes these very words has what they declare and state, namely, \u201cforgiveness of sins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Who, then, receives this sacrament worthily? Answer:<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Fasting and bodily preparation are in fact a fine external discipline, but a person who has faith in these words, \u201cgiven for you\u201d and \u201cshed for you for the forgiveness of sins,\u201d is really worthy and well prepared. However, a person who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, because the words \u201cfor you\u201d require truly believing hearts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p class=\"western\"><a class=\"sdfootnotesym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\" name=\"sdfootnote1sym\">9<\/a><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">8 <\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Woodcut: The distribution of the Lord\u2019s Supper.
