About the Choir

The Immanuel Church Choir is an enthusiastic group of singers with a love for the great sacred choral masterpieces from the 15th century to the 21st century. The Choir, under the direction of Dr. Gwendolyn Toth, rehearses each Sunday morning and then leads the congregation in song for the 11 am liturgy, singing generally two anthems each week.

The Choir at Christmas

For Christmas, the choir prepares a special program of favorite Christmas music from Victoria to Poulenc as a half hour prelude to the service.

The Choir at Easter

During Holy Week, the Choir adds a moving and powerful dimension to the church’s worship for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. The choir is joined by the Immanuel Brass Ensemble for festive liturgies throughout the year.

The Immanuel Choir meets at 9 am every Sunday from mid-September through approximately the end of May. The group rehearses from 9-10:40 then takes a short break before mass at 11 am.

Extra rehearsals during the weeks before Reformation Sunday, Christmas, and Holy Week take place (usually) on Thursday evenings.

Join the Choir!

No special audition is required, but good music reading ability is helpful since the choir sings a large amount of music. Professional section leaders assist the director in rehearsing the music, which is generally polyphonic and often a cappella.

All vocal parts are welcome:

  • sopranos
  • altos
  • tenors
  • basses

We currently number about 23 singers – Our goal is 30 members! Contact us at music@immanuelnyc.org
